How To Fly An Electric RC Helicopter – First Flight Without Training Gear

My programme of learning how to fly an electric rc helicopter recently took a new turn: I finally decided to dump the RC helicopter training gear on my Esky Belt CPV2…

This video below isn’t much to look at, but I wanted to document my first lift off without the fairly heavy training gear!

I was a bit nervous about over-controlling after being used to the stabilizing effect of the gear. The video clearly shows that I was initially too heavy on the controls: see that fast sideslip where the Belt CP disappears from view for ages!

After a few moments I settled down a bit more, but I was still anxious enough to actually forget to take the machine a bit higher for more stability, so I slipped around in rotor wash for much of the time.

There was also a slight breeze which didn’t help, so I soon decided to see if I could take her down without tipping over.

I was happy to have survived that first “free” flight, especially taking off and landing without tipping over, preventing which is probably the main benefit of having the training gear.
