Looking at various ‘How to fly an RC helicopter’ video clips will quickly teach you a lot of things about this challenging hobby, especially if you’re trying to come to grips with a collective pitch machine such as the Esky Belt CP 450 V2 featured in the short film below!
While the toy helicopter market with the many co-axial helicopters on offer have made it look fairly easy for those who want to know how to fly an electric RC helicopter, a collective pitch helicopter is a bird of a different shade altogether.
The short clip below shows the result of a number of hours’ practice on the ground, and a first attempt at hovering for any length of time.
Expert heli pilots will point out that at this very low level stable hovering is made more difficult because of the turbulence caused by rotorwash. However, going any higher at this level of competence can quickly turn into disaster as momentary loss of control can cause a “fatal” sideslip from which an inexperienced pilot can’t recover.
Keeping things at deck-hugging hight makes it possible to simply drop the heli the moment you start to lose control!
